When Germany’s government moved from Bonn to Berlin, sensitive information needed a safer way to travel too. In 1999, the Federal Office for Information Security, the BSI, commissioned secunet to develop SINA, a system for handling classified information digitally. secunet Security Networks AG had become an independent company just two years earlier, after separating from TÜV Mitte AG.

Today, the Essen-based company sells protected computers, encrypted network connections and security services to public authorities and businesses. SINA keeps different working environments separate and protects the information moving between them. The wider portfolio includes cloud infrastructure, digital identity and border-control systems. The job is to let organisations use sensitive data while controlling who can reach it.
