Precision earns its place in the machine
ETE analysis ·
A supplier to many kinds of automation
The opportunity is to supply more measurement and feedback technology as machines become more precise. Semiconductor equipment, machine tools and robots all need reliable positioning, but they do not share one investment cycle. The group should be assessed on those actual customer markets, not only on humanoid-robot forecasts.
Growth continues into the new financial year
Revenue in the quarter ended September 2026 reached £251.8 million, 47% above the previous year. Position Measurement, which includes encoders, grew 84% to £96.0 million. This supports the case for precision components used in demanding equipment, but the sales should not be relabelled as revenue from humanoid robots.
Repeat orders are the next check
Watch whether equipment customers sustain orders after the recent increase, and how that affects factory utilisation and margins. Technical quality supports a product’s position, but customers can delay capital expenditure even when the product performs exactly as intended.
Annual profit and quarterly sales cover different periods
FY2026 reported operating profit was £135.3 million, with basic earnings of £1.635 per share. The October trading statement updates revenue for Q1 FY2027 but does not publish new profit or cash figures. Renishaw reports in pounds while its London share price is usually in pence, so valuation comparisons need the same currency unit as well as the right period.
What the valuation needs to support
The relevant valuation question is how much of the stronger demand can persist through an equipment cycle. Compare the share price with earnings and cash generation in a consistent currency, then allow for development spending and capacity investment. A premium for precision technology still needs durable customer orders behind it.
What would weaken the case
- Capital-spending cycles can interrupt demand for precision equipment.
- Product development, foreign exchange and manufacturing costs affect the profit earned from growth.
