Investment Thesis
Turning advanced equipment orders into a more consistent earnings stream
ETE analysis ·
The opportunity is in manufacturing capability
Oxford Instruments offers exposure to the tools that researchers and manufacturers need as devices become more demanding to make. The investment case strengthens if new equipment placements lead to profitable deliveries and subsequent service revenue. Quantum is one source of demand within that model, rather than a disclosed standalone earnings engine.
Orders are starting to reach sales
The October update reported nearly 44% growth in first-half orders and about 8% in revenue. Advanced Technologies revenue grew about 26% as capacity expanded. These are encouraging preliminary figures; full interim results are due on 10 November 2026.
Research budgets meet industrial spending
Europe’s quantum strategy supports a longer-term case for research infrastructure, while international semiconductor and quantum manufacturers provide a separate commercial demand channel. The two operate on different purchasing schedules. Equipment orders, delivery acceptance and service activity are more useful company indicators than the headline value of a national technology programme.
The statutory improvement needs context
Continuing statutory operating profit rose from £37.6m to £58.0m, while adjusted operating profit fell from £79.5m to £73.7m. The difference reflects the effect of adjusting items, including the prior year’s goodwill impairment. It would therefore be misleading to treat the statutory increase as equally strong underlying growth.
Judge the remaining business on its own
A valuation should use the earnings and capital needs of the continuing businesses following the disposal. A stronger order book can support future revenue, but the shareholder benefit depends on conversion, product mix and margins. Applying a quantum-sector multiple to the whole group would ignore its actual sales mix.
What would weaken the case
- Customer funding interruptions or delayed equipment acceptance could postpone revenue.
- A weaker product mix could limit profit recovery even as the order book converts.

The business in numbers
Annual
Income statement
Calculated: margins = profit ÷ revenue; free cash flow = operating cash flow less capital expenditure; net debt = debt less cash; liabilities = assets less equity. The company-specific notes explain what debt includes. Negative net debt represents net cash. Quarterly flows cover each individual quarter; balance sheet figures are at period end.
Revenue, profit and EPS cover continuing operations, with FY2025 restated following the NanoScience disposal. Total group profit including discontinued operations was £48.2m in FY2026. Adjusted earnings are not substituted for statutory results.
