Overview

Summary

IQM began in 2018 as a spin-off from Aalto University and VTT in Finland. Based in Espoo, it now builds quantum computers for universities, research laboratories, supercomputing centres and companies. Its chips use tiny electrical circuits, cooled close to absolute zero, as quantum bits. Researchers use them to test ways of calculating that could help with tasks such as modelling materials. Useful results still depend on controlling errors.

Customers can buy a computer to operate at their own site, with installation, training and support. Spark is a five-qubit machine for teaching and experiments. Radiance serves more demanding research and computing centres, while Halocene is designed for developing error correction. Resonance provides cloud access to IQM hardware without buying a machine.

IQM, Quantinuum and Creotech: getting to know Europe’s quantum computing industry

A quantum computer uses the behaviour of matter at very small scales to process information in a different way. Researchers are developing these machines to tackle certain problems that today’s computers struggle to solve.
