From satellites and equipment to services used on Earth.
Space companies build infrastructure that people use on Earth. Satellites carry communications, observe weather and crops, and provide navigation signals. Rockets put them into orbit; ground stations and software turn their signals into usable services. The business can be a component sold once, a multi-year spacecraft contract or a service billed throughout a satellite’s working life.
Manufacturing and launch are usually called upstream. Communications, navigation and observation services sit downstream. A spacecraft builder earns money from delivering equipment, while an operator needs customers to use the capacity. More satellites in orbit can create demand for parts and ground equipment, but can also increase competition between service providers.
Market size & opportunity
ESA’s July 2026 Space Economy Report values the global upstream market at €75 billion and downstream at approximately €490 billion for 2025. Navigation-related activity dominates downstream. These are broad industry estimates, not the addressable market for a satellite manufacturer or a small optical-component supplier.
Access matters as much as scale. Government missions can require local sourcing, security clearance and years of qualification. Commercial constellations may buy in larger batches but concentrate orders among a few customers. A signed contract can take years to turn into cash as payments follow development work, launch schedules and acceptance milestones.

Recent progress
Europe added a heavier launch option on 12 February 2026. The first Ariane 64 flight, using four boosters, placed 32 Amazon Leo satellites into low Earth orbit, according to ESA. This was an actual deployment. It expands the range of payloads Europe can launch, while regular flight cadence and production cost remain separate business questions.
The next step for many smaller suppliers is turning a qualified design into repeat deliveries. Space hardware must survive launch and work for years with limited opportunities for repair. Flight experience can help win later missions, but each new platform may still need redesign and testing. The useful evidence is delivered units and accepted milestones, alongside the order book.
